Anton Tabone - Speaker of the House of Representatives

Born : on the island of Gozo, Malta in 1937

Education/Profession : Received his education at the Gozo Seminary and St Aloysius College in B'Kara, Malta. Between 1955 and 1966 he was employed with the National Bank of Malta, now the Bank of Valletta.

Political Career : Elected Member of the Gozo Civic Council from 1966 to 1973 representing the locality of Fontana. Successfully contested all national elections in the interests of the Nationalist Party since 1966 to 1996, representing the Gozo District in Parliament, and was the longest serving Member of Parliament from the island of Gozo. For fourteen years he was the Party spokesman, first on Agriculture and Fisheries and then for Gozo Affairs. He was again the Shadow Minister for Gozo Affairs from 1996 to 1998. In May 1987, Mr Tabone was appointed the first ever national Cabinet Minister with portfolio responsibilities for the island of Gozo, a post he held up to October 1996.

Education/Profession : Graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration of Gdansk University.

Party : AWS (Akcja Wyborcza Solidarnosc / Solidarity Electoral Action)

Political career : In 1988, he elected president of the conservative political club "The Lech Bàdkowski Political Thought Club", which grouped the conservative and liberal circles of Gdansk, subsequently co-founder of the Gdansk-based Liberal Congress. In 1990, member of the conservative-liberal grouping Republican Coalition, which was later on transformed into the Conservative Party. On 3 August 1990, as a "Solidarity" candidate, he was appointed the voivode (governor) of the Gdansk province by Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki. He was recalled from this post by Prime Minister Cimoszewicz on 9 July 1996. In October 1996, he was elected deputy chairman of the Solidarity Electoral Action in the Gdansk region. On 20 October 1997, he was elected Marshal of the Sejm of the 3rd Term.

In 1996 and 1997 he was a member of the Executive Council of the International Parliamentary Organisation (UPI) and was elected a member of the Bureau of the Socialist Parliamentary Group at the Council of Europe in 1998. Re-elected to Slovenian Parliament for a second time in 1996 and became the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. Elected Chairman of the National Assembly in a secret ballot by 63 votes to 25 in 10 November 2000.
