Political career : His political activities include : Vice-consul in Sao Borja, Brazil, from 1965 to 1966.Assistant Secretary of the Radical Board of the Province of Misiones from 1972 to 1976. Secretary of said Board from 1976 to 1982. Delegate to the National Radical Convention from 1972 to 1976. Chairman of the Radical Board of the Province of Misiones for the periods 1983-1985, 1985-1986, and 1989-1990. Chairman of the Honorable House of Representatives of his province from 1983 to 1985. Andrés Zaldivar Larraín - President of the Senate

Born : on March 18, 1936 in Santiago

Party : PDC (Partido Demócrata Cristiano / Christian-Democratic Party)

Education/Profession : High School at the Colegio de los Hermanos Marista de Santiago : "Instituto Alonso de Ercilla". Faculty of Law from the University of Chile. During his exile (1980-1983), Andrés Zaldívar founded the Centro de Investigaciones para Iberoamérica y España (CIPIE)(Center of Investigation for Latin America and Spain), a foundatión which won in 1987 from the UN the special award of Peace Messenger, owing to its action and social development projects in Latin América and Africa.

Political career : 1952 an active member of the Partido Conservador Social Cristiano. 1956 he was appointed Secretary of the Unión of University Federations. 1957, as a head of the social christian youth he was a co-founder of the Christian Democratic party. Between 1959 and 1963 he served as a secretary-lawyer of the Municipality of Colina, and in 1962 he was appointed Judgeof the local Police of La Cisterna. In 1964 he served as an Executive Secretary of the Comissión for Government Program in the campaign which led Eduardo Frei Montalva to the presidency of the Republic. Subsequently he was appointed, Under-secretary of State for Finance and between 1968-1970 he joined President Frei's cabinet as a Minister of Finance, assuming for several months both positions of Finance Minister and Minister of the Economy. In 1970 he was elected as a National Consellor of the Christian Democratic Party. 1972- he joined the political Comissión of the PDC. 1973 he was elected Senator of the Repúblic for Coquimbo and Atacama, a position he assumed for several months only, because of the military coup that was held the same year. Between 1976 and 1982 he was Chairman of the Partido Demócrata Cristiano. In 1980 he was forced to exile by the military governmen. 1982, elected President of the International Christian Demócrats, an organizatión gathering 54 countries around the world, and he assumed his charge until 1986. Back to Chile, Vice- National Chairman to the PDC (1983-1985) ; National Counsellor (1985-1987) ; First National Vice-president (1987-1989), and National President (1989-1990), a position to which he was re-elected over the period 1990-1991. During the last parliamentary elections of december 1989 he was elected as a senator for the 7ª Constituency and held the position between 1990-1998. During the 1997 parliamentary elections,he was re-elected as a Senator again for the la 7ª Constituency, over 1998-2006 winning the majority of the votes. On March 11, 1998 he was elected President of the Senate, a position he will hold until 2002.

Education/Profession : Higher studies at the University Complutense in Madrid and at the Law Faculty from the University of Cuenca. He served as a Dean of the Faculty of Trade Engineering from the Catholic University in Cuenca, from 1970 to 1973, a Dean of the Faculty of Legal Science from the University of Azuay, from 1988 to 1994. A tenured professor of penal Law of the Universities SEK and of Azuay.

Political career : Began his political career in the 60s whan he was a student of the secondary and joined the Christian Democracy ranks in Azuay. Governor of Azuay between 1982 and 1983, MP for Azuay province between 1994 and 1996, MP for Azuay province re-elected between 1996 and 1998, National MP from 1998 to 2002 and First Vice-presidentof the Honorable National Congress from 2000 to 2001 and on June 6, 2001 he was sworn in as President of the National Congress until January 2003.
